Today I'm lending my son money to buy a 99 GSXR600 SRAD, his 1st bike, he's never been on the road before, he's still got to take his fast track pass course. His mates with R6's, R1's Gixers, are all speed merchants and I've warned him about the peer pressure of following any dodgy moves

As a dad I'm worried about him, he's 22 and say's he'll be careful....famous last words.

I'll go out with him and try to install some roadcraft and the dangers to look out for and I'm trying to look at this in a positive way as biking is fantastic.

What would you guys advise?

I think your doing all you can do, I havent been riding long, since August 08 and a few of my mates are the same. Really fast bikes and are defianatly speed merchants. I just ride to my own pace and don't do anything I don't feel safe doing.
It comes down to his self control but if you take him out it may open his eyes a little on some of the dangers etc...

Congrats to him on the new bike. I'd ride with him as much as possible in the early months and point out any errors in a nice way. You could perhaps get a ride with the group too but doubtless they'll want to leave the 'old man' behind ;)

A birthday present of some handling lessons on a track could help.

Wish my dad had bought me a Gixxer!

Sound advice there form Ses and ID. He is welcome to come out with our group rides, we go briskly without going completely mad. Invite is open to you too bud, it would be good to hook up again.

Wish my Dad had bought me a bike too!

Check out TT07's 10 year review of his GSXR600. I rode that recently and it is a cracking bike

He's doing his direct access at mallory. The bike is quite decent and maybe heavy enough to keep him out of trouble. Watch this space

Bikesafe....

... let him get the hang of the bike and book him on this. Pretty much all police forces do it.

Its the best training I have ever had.

they are great bikes, my first big bike was an srad. everyone tried to warn me off saying it would end in tears and the more they tried to persuade me not to get it the mmore determined i was to get it lol
go with the flow and take him out with you a couple of times before he goes out with his mates, and remind him it aint a race. it handles well and is fun at any speeds, you dont need to go ballistic to have a hoot.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, VODKA in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.......WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE!!
